WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has lavished praise on world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, saying ‘The Gypsy King’ can “accomplish anything he puts his mind on”.
Fury has enjoyed an incredible comeback story, from thinking of taking his own life and ballooning to 28 stone after that unforgettable victory over Wladimir Klitschko in 2015, to destroying Deontay Wilder to take the WBC title in Las Vegas in February.
As well as the hallowed belt, Fury also now has the utmost respect of the man whose governing body hands it out. And Sulaiman is delighted that the heavyweight division – boxing’s marquee weight class – is booming with Fury, Wilder and Anthony Joshua all jockeying for pole position at the top table.
Sulaiman on Fury comeback
He told Omnisport: “The heayvweight division is booming. In the last 20 years it’s never been as interesting as it now.
“Tyson Fury, what an unbelievable story, an unbelievable comeback from thinking of taking his life to now being the WBC champion of the world. Knocking out Wilder, who had been champion for five years, undefeated with such a knockout record.”
Fury is widely acclaimed as the finest pure boxer in the heavyweight division, and his incredible force of personality means he has star power as well as being unbelievably relaxed and assured. Sulaiman believes it is qualities like these which mean Fury’s future is every bit as bright as his present and his past.
“You can see Tyson Fury doing anything he puts his mind on. He’s very powerful, he’s very intelligent, very calm. Very unique, so he has all the elements to accomplish any of his dreams,” he said.
Fury’s next fight is scheduled to be a third meeting with Wilder in the fourth quarter of this year, and if he comes through that test unscathed a blockbusting double-header against Joshua in 2021 awaits to unify all of the titles.
