Tyson Fury says he’s not training right now as he takes a break from the daily grind in the ring after becoming “burnt out”.
The WBC, Ring magazine and lineal world heavyweight champion says he had been training solidly for the last three years, and it’s now time to rest ahead of that planned showdown with Anthony Joshua.
Speaking to MTK Global at Friday night’s Bolton show, Fury said: “I’m not training no more. I’ve never stopped training since December 2017, and even after these world title fights I trained the next day. I go running 10 miles or stupid things, 2million press-ups and circuits – I’m in the gym sparring and messing around.
Fury not training
“I’m having some time away from the game at the moment. I’ve been ready to fight since I beat Deontay Wilder last year. I’ve had no success in getting another fight.”
Fury is clearly frustrated that the unification match with Joshua is not yet confirmed, despite the recent positive bulletins from promoters Eddie Hearn, Frank Warren and Bob Arum.
When asked how close that bout is to reality, he answered: “You tell me, I think everyone in the building knows more about this fight than I do actually. Apparently it’s done, it’s signed, we’ve got a date, a venue, we know how much we’re getting. News to me, I don’t know Jack, I don’t know anything.
“As far as I’m concerned I’m not even training any more, I’ve stopped training. SugarHill’s gone home, he went home end of November, Andy Lee’s gone home. I’ve packed up, I’m having a rest, I burnt out you know, done too much. I need a rest mentally, physically and emotionally.”
Let me fight – ‘The Gypsy King’
It’s now 13 months since Fury destroyed Wilder in that Las Vegas rematch, and he is itching to get back into action after the collapse of December’s planned trilogy fight with ‘The Bronze Bomber’.
“I’ve got a lot of people to pay, a lot of overheads, a lot of hands holding out who need feeding. So come on, give The Gypsy King’ a break, let me fight.
“At the moment I’m concentrating on getting me 10 pints of Stella to 12 every day. I could drink 14 pints and still give AJ an hiding, no problem.”
