Ben Davison reveals who he would like Anthony Joshua to fight in September

Anthony Joshua is right back at heavyweight boxing’s top table with trainer of the moment Ben Davison masterminding his return to former glories.

Joshua (28-3) is well on the road to becoming. a three-time world champion after reeling off five victories since those back-to-back defeats by new undisputed king Oleksandr Usyk in 2021 and 2022.

Now AJ is being lined up to headline Saudi Arabia’s first massive show in the UK on September 21 at Wembley Stadium. And ahead of that, promoter Eddie Hearn has listed opponents he would love to fight:

Of those six though, who is a realistic prospect? The two that scream out of course are Hrgovic and Dubois – who are set to clash on Saturday week (June 1) in that Hearn vs Frank Warren 5 on 5 card.

Fury and Usyk of course are set to rematch their epic undisputed fight on October 12 in Riyadh, so that would rule them out. Wilder meanwhile has Zhilei Zhang in his sights – again in that 5 vs 5 card featuring the Matchroom and Queensberry stables.

Ben Davison on AJ next opponent

The partnership of Joshua and Davison has been a revelation since the highly-rated Brit took over his corner for the last two fights – absolute obliterations of Otto Wallin and Francis Ngannou. And who would the trainer himself prefer to fight?

A post on Davison’s X account read : “If can’t get Usyk/Fury, Joseph Parker is the next best and deserving in my opinion. He is probably the biggest draw too. 2 fighters in great form. Thoughts?”

Parker of course is another heavyweight who has enjoyed a real renaissance in the last 12 months, producing five wins on the bounce since a brutal knockout by Joe Joyce in late 2022. That run culminated in the last five months with impressive Saudi successes against Wilder and Chinese giant Zhilei Zhang.

Joshua and Parker of course have met in the past – they rumbled in Cardiff in March 2018, when AJ prevailed on points in a heavyweight unification match. A rematch would be a fascinating prospect between two men who are once again right at the top of their games.
