Two years on from that acrimonious first meeting back in February 2022, these two warriors will run it back on Saturday May 25 in a promotion they are already calling ‘Hate Runs Deep’. The initial date of April 27 was postponed after Taylor sustained an injury in training.

What happened in the first fight?

Taylor vs Catterall took place at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow, in front of a passionate pro-Taylor crowd. On the line were his IBF, WBC, WBA and WBO super-lightweight world titles.

It was Catterall though who appeared to dominate for long periods, fighting with skill and concentration as he defused everything Taylor could throw at him.

‘El Gato’ appeared to be well on course for victory when he had Taylor cut and then on the floor in Round 8. He was though deducted a point for holding in Round 10 while Taylor was docked a point too a round later for punching after the bell.

To the scorecards we went, with Howard Foster scoring it 113-112 in favour of Catterall. To the dismay of the man from Chorley, Lancashire though it was not enough as Taylor prevailed by split decision via scores of 114-111 (Ivan John-Lewis) and 113-112 (Victor Loughlin).

The post-fight acrimony – unsurprisingly – was on another level from what we’d seen in the pre-fight build-up. The two years since have seen Catterall constantly calling out Taylor and pushing for that rematch. Now, at last, he gets his second chance.

What happened since the first fight?

Catterall has fought twice since that first meeting with Taylor – both times registering victories by unanimous decision.

First he easily outpointed Darragh Foley in a 10-rounder in Manchester in May 2023, and followed up with another decision over Jorge Linares in Liverpool in October.

Taylor meanwhile has fought just once since the first meeting, and it cost him his perfect professional record. He lost that – and his world super-lightweight title – in a loss to Teofimo Lopez at Madison Square Garden in New York in June 2023.
