‘Canelo’ next fight in works as Boxing’s cash cow is apparently headed back to DAZN

Boxing’s P4P cash cow is seemingly headed back to DAZN for his next fight after Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez reportedly split with Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions (PBC).

The Mexican megastar has reportedly agreed a mutual parting of the ways with PBC, just one fight into a three-fight deal. He had been set to meet Jermall Charlo on May 4 in a Cinco de Mayo weekend spectacular, but that won’t now happen.

Instead, ‘Canelo’ will reportedly head back to DAZN, where he signed an enormous 11-fight deal back in 2018, worth a staggering $365million. He did not see that deal out of course following a split with Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions. But it appears he did build up an excellent working relationship with Matchroom Boxing supremo and DAZN cornerstone Eddie Hearn after returning to the platform in 2021.

Munguia next for ‘Canelo’?

Now it appears the 33-year-old Alvarez (60-2-2) will defend his undisputed world super-middleweight title on Cinco de Mayo weekend, likely against undefeated Mexican star Jaimie Munguia.

Talks are reportedly ongoing between Hearn and Alvarez for the P4P superstar to match Munguia, who has impressed in building a 43-0 record (with 34 wins inside distance). In his latest outing in January he dismantled Britain’s John Ryder by stoppage, a few months after ‘Canelo’ had been taken to the scorecards by Ryder. Another potential opponent is the hard-hitting New Yorker Edgar Berlanga (22-0).

Alvarez for his part has fought three times since that surprise loss to Dmitry Bivol in their world light-heavyweight title fight in 2022. Each of those fights has resulted in a win by unanimous decision back down at 168lbs – against Gennadiy Golovkin, Ryder and then Jermell Charlo last September.

Blow for Amazon Prime Video?

While the news is obviously not good for PBC, it might be even worse for the promotional company’s new partnership with Amazon Prime Video. The streaming platform only recently inked a pact with PBC for a boxing service, and surely ‘Canelo’ would have been a cornerstone of building an audience there.

Now though it appears Alvarez is heading back to DAZN, and once again we can look forward to ‘Canelo’ and Hearn donning Dolce and Gabbana pyjamas at weigh-ins. What a time to be alive.
