Fury vs Joshua could be NEXT for AJ says Eddie Hearn, and this is why

The wait for Fury vs Joshua has been long and painful, but promoter Eddie Hearn believes there is a way it ends pretty soon.

AJ is in line for a shot at the winner of the Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk world heavyweight title unification battles after his absolute demolition job on former UFC king Francis Ngannou last Friday night in Riyadh.

Of course for a Fury vs Joshua match to happen at all, ‘The Gypsy King’ needs to hand Usyk his first ever professional defeat on May 18 – no small feat. But there is another obstacle in the way too. Fury and Usyk have a contracted rematch clause.

Eddie Hearn on Fury vs Joshua

Two Fury vs Usyk fights would in theory leave AJ waiting for the winner until at least early 2025, but his promoter Hearn believes that may not necessarily be the case.

He told Matchroom Boxing: “No decision will be made, in my opinion, before the Fury-Usyk fight. Because I’m still a firm believer that if Tyson Fury wins that fight, His Excellency [Turki Alalshikh, Chariman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority] will do everything he can – regardless of the two-fight deal – to make what is the biggest fight in the history of the sport.”

If Fury and Usyk do go through with that contracted rematch, then there is a chance Joshua could face Filip Hrgovic next should the IBF title become vacant. Hrgovic is the mandatory contender and Joshua is next in the rankings, and it would give AJ the opportunity to become a three-time world heavyweight champion.

Hearn though is not counting any chickens, explaining: “Really, there’s lots of opportunities for AJ.”
