Anthony Joshua ‘rescued alive’ as two die in horrific car crash in NIgeria

Two-time world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has been rescued from a horrific road traffic accident which killed two people in Nigeria on Monday.

The 36-year-old British superstar, who is the son of British Nigerian parents, sustained what local authorities described as ‘minor injuries’ in the fatal accident, which took place along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, around the Sinoma area near Sagamu, Ogun State.

The Federal Road Safety Corps of Nigeria stated that the collision took place between a Lexus Jeep carrying Joshua and a stationary truck. It also confirmed the tragic news of two fatalities.

Anthony Joshua has ‘minor injuries’

A statement on social media channels read: “Two persons sadly lost their lives, one sustained injuries, while two others escaped unhurt. Anthony Joshua was rescued alive and sustained minor injuries.

“The injured victim was evacuated for medical attention, while the remains of the deceased were conveyed to Livewell Morgue, Ajaka, Sagamu. The Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division (MTD) was duly notified for further investigation and necessary documentation.”

While the statement confirmed that Joshua had avoided serious injury, video footage shared on social media showed the boxing great appearing to be in pain as he was helped from the stricken vehicle.

The terrible accident comes just days after Joshua had returning to boxing action from a 15-month layoff, knocking out Jake Paul in their much-hyped Netflix fight in Miami on December 19.

What caused the accident?

The cause of the accident is being investigated by local authorities, but the FRSC did release initial findings.

“Preliminary findings indicate that the Lexus Jeep, which was suspected to be travelling beyond the legally prescribed speed limit on the corridor, lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre and crashed into a stationary truck well packed by the side of the road.”
