Canelo vs Crawford: Date AND venue change announced by Turki Alalshikh

Just a few days out from the first announcement to confirm that Canelo Alvarez vs Terence Crawford megafight, we have another one to change the date AND the venue.

Then the date was given as Friday September 12, with the venue Allegiant Stadium – home to the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders.

But fast forward a few days and we have new details for the massive blockbuster at 168lbs.

New date and venue

So the ‘new’ date for Canelo vs Crawford is now Saturday September 13, a day later than initially announced – this from Turki Alalshikh, via Mike Coppinger of Ring magazine.

The venue meanwhile is now up in the air, with five possible sites in the mix across Las Vegas, New York and Los Angeles.

There is now a ton of excitement about where the show could take place – remember a recent Ring magazine show via Riyadh Season took place at Times Square in New York. Meanwhile the July 12 card featuring Edgar Berlanga vs Hamzah Sheeraz and Shakur Stevenson vs William Zepeda will take place at US Open tennis venue Flushing Meadows.

Dana White to co-promote

Canelo vs Crawford will also have two very familiar promoters in Alalshikh and UFC mastermind Dana White. The bout will be under the TKO banner – the publicly traded company backed by WWE and UFC.

The bout will of course take place at 168lbs – three divisions higher than career welter Crawford has boxed for most of his storied career. All of Canelo’s super-middleweight titles, including the Ring magazine belt, will be on the line.

As yet there are no confirmed details for the superfight, but it is likely to be a PPV show in the UK and US, unless Netflix wins the rights and streams it to subscribers. It did so for that Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul blockbuster last year, and will do so again for Katie Taylor vs Amanda Serrano 3 in New York on July 11.
