Moses Itauma looks special but he still has not had ‘ultimate chin check’ – top agent

The excitement about Moses Itauma is very real as the British heavyweight sensation prepares for his first major test at elite level.

On Saturday August 16 the brilliantly talented 20-year-old from Chatham, Kent faces former world title challenger Dillian Whyte in an eagerly-awaited matchup in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Itauma, known as ‘Enriko’, has looked absolutely spectacular in building a 12-0 pro record to date – with 10 of those victories coming inside the first two rounds. His opponents have fallen victim to highlight-reel demolition jobs showcasing devastating speed and power.

At the age of 37, and three years out from flopping on his big night vs Tyson Fury at Wembley Stadium, we do not quite know what Whyte has left. Or how much of a threat he can be. It is a fascinating matchup, a genuine crossroads fight.

Itauma vs Whyte analysis

Top boxing agent Sam Jones spoke at length to talkSPORT about the big showdown, and he summed up perfectly the questions it poses.

Speaking to Gareth A Davies, he said: “Well look, it could be masterful matchmaking. Frank Warren’s a sensational matchmaker, he always has been. He very rarely gets it wrong. He’s obviously got a special fighter on his hands with Moses. He’s done everything right, and he’s made us all think this kid is gonna be the next face of British boxing. It’s either gonna be perfect timing, it’s like, who’s got who at the right time? Has Moses got Dillian at the right time in his career? Or has Dillian got Moses while he’s still green? So, we’re gonna see. That’s what makes it a very intriguing matchup.”

So far Itauma has spent pretty the entirety of his pro career on the front foot, walking down opponents who just cannot live with his intoxicating mix of power and ring IQ for one so young. The British youngster is absolutely box office.

What that does mean though is that Moses has yet to have his chin really tested by an elite heavyweight, so what happens when he does?

Jones added: “I think Moses Itauma looks special. He really does. But, as what people keep saying – he hasn’t had that ultimate chin check. And when – and I’m sure, I’m sure it’s gonna come soon – and is Dillian the, the guy to deliver that shot? Who knows. We’re gonna find out. It’s a very, very intriguing matchup.”
