Anthony Joshua’s close friends and team members killed in tragic accident

Anthony Joshua lost two of his closest friends and team members in that horrific road traffic accident in Nigeria on Monday.

The 36-year-old two-time world heavyweight champion suffered what were described as ‘minor injuries’ in the accident, which took place along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, around the Sinoma area near Sagamu, Ogun State.

The Federal Road Safety Corps of Nigeria stated that the collision took place between a Lexus Jeep carrying Joshua and a stationary truck. It also confirmed the tragic news of two fatalities.

Later on Monday the names of the dead were confirmed as two key AJ team members and close friends – strength and conditioning coach Sina Ghami and personal trainer Latif Ayodele. Our thoughts are very much with their families and friends at this awful time.

Matchroom statement on Joshua crash

A statement from Matchroom Boxing stated: “With profound sadness it has been confirmed that two close friends and team members Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele have tragically passed away.

“Matchroom Boxing and 258 BXG can confirm that Anthony sustained injuries in the accident and was taken to hospital for checks and treatment. He is in a stable condition and will remain there for observation.

“Our deepest condolences and prayers are with the families and friends of all those affected – and we ask that their privacy is respected at this incredibly difficult time.”

Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn himself posted on Instagram, paying tribute to the dead men. He wrote: “With the heaviest of hearts. Two great men. Rest in eternal peace Sina and Latz. My thoughts and deepest prayers are with everyone.”

The tragic accident on Monday came just over a week after Joshua had returned to boxing from a 15-month layoff to knock out Jake Paul in Miami on December 19.

Paul responded to Monday’s double tragedy on social media as he wrote: “RIP Sina Ghami and Kevin ‘Latif / Latz’ Ayodele. My thoughts and prayers are with their families and friends and AJ”.

Joshua was being lined up for his next fight in February, followed by that all-British showdown vs Tyson Fury later in 2026. But right now boxing plans are meaningless and so inconsequential compared to what happened in Nigeria on Monday.

Once again, our thoughts right now are only with Anthony Joshua and the families and friends of Sina and Latif. RIP.
