WBC Heavyweight Rankings: Anthony Joshua in prime position as Usyk ponders next fight

Anthony Joshua is still very much in the world heavyweight title picture as the British superstar considers his boxing future and his next fight.

The 35-year-old two-time world heavyweight champion (now 28-4) failed to join the select band of three-time heavyweight kings last September when he was shockingly destroyed by Daniel Dubois in their showdown for the IBF belt at a packed Wembley Stadium.

It was an astonishing performance for Dubois, and it stopped Joshua’s renaissance under new trainer Ben Davison right in its tracks. It also left many questioning which way AJ could possibly go next.

For now he is going precisely nowhere as he recovers from an injury, but we’ve had all sorts of suggestions – anything from a Dubois rematch, an Oleksandr Usyk trilogy fight, that long-awaited British blockbuster vs Tyson Fury or a crossover affair vs YouTuber Jake Paul.

While AJ holds zero belts in 2025, he is still highly rated by the governining bodies, with the WBC moving him up to #2 in their latest rankings for April 2025. Usyk of course remains the champion while German star Agit Kabayel is the interim title holder and the mandatory contender. Lawrence Okolie currently occupies the #1 slot.

The rest of the list is a who’s who of established prospects and former title holders, with Croatian Filip Hrgovic up to #5 after his decision victory over Joe Joyce in Manchester, England on April 5. The same night in Las Vegas, US prospect Richard Torrez Jr was outpointing Guido Vianello in his biggest test yet, and his reward is a ranking in the top 10 at #9.

Former world heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder is also in the top 15 ahead of his return to action vs Tyrrell Herndon in Wichita, Kansas in June and he currently sits at #12.

Who are the world heavyweight champions?

Right, now, in April 2025, two men sit atop the heavyweight boxing mountain.

The brilliant Usyk (23-0) holds the WBC, WBA, WBO, Ring magazine and lineal titles following those sensational back-to-back wins over Tyson Fury in 2024. Daniel Dubois (22-2) holds the IBF strap after defending it successfully vs Joshua at Wembley last September.

We wait to find out who each man will face in their next fight. It is possible of course that they could face each other in a fight to become the undisputed heavyweight champion. They have met before, with Usyk overcoming Dubois by stoppage in August 2023.
